is pleased to welcome Drew Barthlow, L.Ac, D.Ac. to our staff. Drew is a graduate of the University of Georgia and he has recently returned from Hawaii, where he spent four years earning his Masters Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the World Medicine Institute.

Upon graduating in the Spring of 2010, Drew began practicing in Honolulu and, seeking to deepen his understanding of Chinese Medicine, joined the faculty at the World Medicine Institute, teaching Diagnosis, Point Categories, and Qigong.

After six years of living in Hawaii, Drew and his family decided to return home to Georgia to be closer to friends and family, and to serve the community of Athens that was so generous to him while he was attending UGA.

Drew is adept at treating a wide variety of conditions, yet his specialties are in treating stress, anxiety, insomnia, headaches, spiritual/emotional issues, digestive disorders, and acute and chronic pain. He very much enjoys working with raw herbs, which are typically decocted into a tea or made into a salve, and will be working to add this new element to our services at the Acupuncture Center. Can acupuncture be used to treat infertility?

Acupuncture, frequently combined with herbal medicine, has been used for centuries to treat some causes of infertility. For example, acupuncture and herbs will not work to address tubal adhesions which can occur as a result of pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis. However, in this situation, an individual could still benefit from acupuncture and herbs because of the potential effect of improved ovarian and follicular function. Additionally, it is shown that acupuncture can increase blood flow to the endometrium, helping to facilitate a thick, rich lining.

What types of fertility patients typically get acupuncture?

Acupuncture can be used to treat any type of fertility disorder including spasmed tubes. (Spasmed tubes are often de-spasmed with acupuncture, though blocked tubes will not respond to acupuncture). Acupuncture is often combined with herbs to treat elevated follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), repeated pregnancy loss, unexplained (idiopathic) infertility, luteal phase defect, hyperprolactinemia (when not caused by a prolactinoma), polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) with annovulatory cycles, and male factor including men affected with sperm-DNA-fragmentation.

How Does Acupuncture Help Break the Cigarette Habit?

Acupuncture is successful with smoking cessation and has turned a growing number of cigarette smokers into permanent ex-smokers. Treatments take all of your symptoms into account and aim at balancing the energy within the body to optimize health.

The acupuncture treatments focus on jitters, cravings, irritability and restlessness; all symptoms that people commonly complain about when they quit. It also aids in relaxation and detoxification.

In one study conducted at the University of Oslo, Norway, acupuncture was found to significantly reduce the desire to smoke up to five years after the initial treatment. Subjects of the study also reported that cigarettes tasted worse than before treatment and that the treatments had effectively reduced their taste for tobacco.

The acupuncture needles used are hair-thin. They are superficially inserted into various points in the ears and body to assist with smoking cessation. In between treatments, small pellets are often taped to the acupuncture points on the ear. When a cigarette craving hits, gently pressing on the pellets stimulates the acupuncture points to calm the mind and eliminate the craving.

Acupuncture is not a panacea or a magic cure in the treatment of any addiction, including smoking. But, acupuncture is effective in making it easier to quit and remain smoke-free for good.
